Call for Clay catalogs the results of Downing’s “crowd-sourced clay” project. Through public open calls, Downing invited participants to send samples of foraged clay along with letters describing the places where the clay was found. As a collection, the samples and letters demonstrate attentiveness toward handfulls of dirt that often go unoticed. This project was produced through Downing’s 2025 Exhibition Artist-in-Residence (ExAIR) at the John Michael Kohler Arts Center in connection with the exhibition A Beautiful Experience: The Midwest Grotto Tradition.
In the spirit of reciprocity, each participant in this project will receive a copy of this publication. Twenty percent of the proceeds generated from this project will be donated to Indigenous arts and media organizations in recognition of and respect for inherent Indigenous sovereignty across Turtle Island.
